In the Thunderbird menu, click: Tools: Account Settings

Then click on Server Settings for your account. Then click on Connection Security, and change it to None:

Now click on Outgoing Server (SMTP) on the left side.

If you have more than one server here on the right side, select the one you want to change. Click the Edit button. That will bring up this window:

Click on Connection Security, and change it to None.
Then click the OK buttons to exit the two account settings windows.
That's it for stopping Thunderbird from using encrypted data connections.
In the Thunderbird menu, click: Tools: Account Settings

Then click on Server Settings for your account.

Change the Server Name to 127.0.0.1. Click on Connection Security, and change it to None. Then change the Port beside your server name to 5300.
Now click on Outgoing Server (SMTP) on the left side.

If you have more than one server here on the right side, select the one you want to change. Click the Edit button. That will bring up this window:

Change the Server Name to 127.0.0.1. Click on Connection Security, and change it to None. Then change the Port to 5400.
Then click the OK buttons to exit the two account settings windows.
Assuming that you already made the changes in AVG on my first webpage, then that's it, your done.
